Bo Ai Animal Protection Centre Of Guangyuan
Due to our persistence at keep urging Guangyuan City authorities to visit a pet market with us, we were eventually able to close it down and confiscate the dogs.
Mainly purebreed dogs were kept for breeding to produce puppies for profit but there were also crossbreed and Chinese Rural Dogs who were also bred, probably to produce puppies for the meat trade. Although the majority of dogs in the meat trade are stolen pets, puppies are sold to butchers by owners whose dogs have given birth so we have no reason to believe this was any different.
This market is full of breeders who run puppy mills where dogs are kept in appalling conditions, hardly ever receiving medical care or seeing daylight which makes them sick.
All of the suffering so that they can give birth to puppies for people to have as status symbols. Of course, not every one who buys a purebreed puppy uses them for this but many do and this is when we find them being abandoned because the owner has got tired of the puppy chewing their belongings or not being house trained. People easily get bored of dogs once they grow out of the 'cute baby' stage too.
We urge people to adopt not buy but still the breeding and abandoning continues.
This at least was a victory for the mother dogs who were able to receive urgent medical treatment and for the puppies who were given their first vaccinations.
Sadly, some mothers and babies died because they were too sick. Victims of greed.
