On 12th May 2008, a massive earthquake hit our province, killing 70,000 people;
700 of those were in our city of Guangyuan.
Dogs in our affected areas who had lost their owners in the quake were hanging around, waiting for owners to come back. The dogs grouped together for reassurance, forming packs. Others remained solitary.
Due to the fear of rabies and other post-quake widespread diseases, the local government ordered all dogs to be rounded up and slaughtered as a preventative measure so that humans did not catch the diseases.

Due to the fear of rabies and other post-quake widespread diseases, the local government ordered all dogs to be rounded up and slaughtered as a preventative measure so that humans did not catch the diseases.
We took the lead in signing an agreement with the Guangyuan Municipal Government and the Public Security Bureau to stop the killing of dogs in the disaster area. These city offices cooperated with us and as a result, we were able to save some of the dogs. A few dogs were reunited with owners when they had homes to go back to but many dogs had no one, so we became the first advocate of companion animal rescue in the northern Sichuan area.
