On April 11, 2019, our founder Du Yufeng and some of our volunteers found 235 dogs in an illegal hoarding site at a livestock market in Pujia town, Dazhou City. They immediately called the police and government officials who came to the scene to assess the situation. On the afternoon of April 12, the Agriculture and Forestry Law Enforcement Department and the Public Security Bureau invited Du to discuss the handling of the case. It was agreed that the dogs would be placed in our care after 21 days of isolation.
Activists from Dazhou City joined our team and for 4 days and nights in the cold and wet Spring weather they have all watched over the dogs. The dogs were moved to a better safe place where they could stretch their legs but there are some sick dogs and we all know that diseases can run rife in these situations. We cannot move the dogs anywhere else until the 21 days isolation period is up so we desperately need your help to buy medicines and vaccinations.
At this time of year, Sichuan is a hub of trafficked dogs and cats on their way to Yulin for the sickening festival there next month. Please help us to help them. Donate easily via paypal by clicking on the button. Thank you so much!
Amid the fear, sickness and death there is joy, hope and new life.
Some of the dogs rescued from the trafficker's hoarding site has given birth. Defiance against the evil of the Dog Meat Trade.
Volunteers from across Sichuan have been offering help. They have been vaccinating the dogs and playing and socialising with them. It's always amazing to see how some dogs just go from fearing humans to trusting them and wanting cuddles and playtime. They just know the good guys from the bad.....
The days have been filled feeding the dogs food and treats that were nutritious. This includes feeding treats to sick dogs where medicines needed to be hid in food. We have had donations of food from local animal lovers and shops so we were able to make broths and soups to help subsidise the dogs' meals and keep them eating when they are depressed.
Our founder Du Yufeng spends a lot of times with the dogs, reassuring them and telling them that they are ok now and will soon leave Dazhou. The dogs know that Du loves everyone of them even though they have only known each other for a short time.
When the last of the dogs reached our shelter, it was nearly Dawn. Everyone had worked through the night to get these dogs to their new home.
When it was time for the dogs to be unloaded in to the quarantine kennels, our workers and volunteers joined the volunteers from Dazhou to help. Our loyal friend Mr Wang, the bank manager also gave up his sleep to help us all.
Most of the dogs had crude plastic collars tied tightly around their necks. Cutting them off was a priority so Du and our workers caught dogs to perform the quick task.
One of our workers was bitten by a scared dog and even though he was wearing thick gloves the bite penetrated through them to his skin. This is how the Dog Meat Trade affects once loved and gentle pets.
Over the past days the dogs have been settling in well. It is going to take a long time for some of the dogs to trust us but we have patience and lots of love. We have had food donations for the dogs from hotels, market stalls, pet shops and salons and animal lovers. There are lots of kind people in China who love animals.
They will learn to trust again. Some are friendlier than others and ask for reassurance that everything will be ok.
DONATE to help build kennels for these lucky Dog Meat trade survivors.
