Mao Mao enjoyed his first Christmas in America by opening presents.
A couple of months after, Mao Mao had his ear canal removed because it had become mineralized. He recovered well from the operation but he is deaf in that ear. His thyroid level has returned to a good level and his vet is no longer concerned. These things are the difference between China and America. There are limited veterinary procedures in our area of China so knowing Mao Mao is being taken care of so well is very heartwarming for us. Mary says that Mao Mao "makes me so happy and I know he finally understands that this is his forever home" Mao Mao also loves his baths and his groomer. He goes to the grooming parlour regularly for a bath and a trim. Mary says she loves "pampering my sweet boy" Mao Mao has a wonderful home with you Mary ❣

Susan asked our overseas coordinator if Mao Mao's previous owner had asked about him. Unfortunately his previous owner, who used him as a breeding machine, never even asked about him when he left him at the shelter. But...we are so happy that Mao Mao has now found someone who wants to give him the best life possible.
Susan says: " Except for the whitening muzzle, I forget that Mao Mao is 8. He runs, plays and jumps like a puppy.Thank you for allowing Mao Mao to come to me. We are enjoying our retirement together" ♥ Mao Mao's medical history with his previous owner means he probably didn't have a medical history since all he was used for was as a stud dog for his previous owner to make money from. Once he grew too old to sire more puppies he was dumped with us at Bo Ai but now, living in America, he is getting the very best of medical care. Mary took Mao Mao to the vet for more tests. His vet thinks his liver and spleen are fighting body infections that Mao Mao has had for years. He is now on antibiotics for a possible urinary tract infection just to be on the safe side.
Mary loves Mao Mao so much and she can't imagine not sharing her days with him. He has stolen her heart! Mao Mao is continuing to have is medicated baths and loves to roll around and sun in his fleece blanket afterwards. At his recent vet visit he was checked from head to toe and Mary tells us he embarrassed her by (kindly) terrorizing the office cat! Next week Mao Mao will have photos taken of him for Rescue a Golden's calendar!! Fame at last!
The photo below is of Mao Mao and his favorite toy after a morning of playing. Mao Mao is continuing with his medicated baths to help his skin heal. He loves the massage when the bath is given and, like any retriever, he loves the water too although never having seen a chlorine float before, he wasn't quite sure what to make of it when he saw it in Mary's pool. Here he is stood barking at the float!
Mary tells us that Mao Mao is settling in to his new home really well. He is letting Mary know when he needs to go outside to potty which is great news! He just needs to learn where exactly to potty but with his fast learning we are sure he'll get the idea soon. He's also learning some English commands!
Mao Mao loves to play and also loves to nap afterwards. He is such a cute boy. Mao Mao made it to America and has met his new mommy, Mary! We are so happy to see him safe and already being loved as part of Mary's family. Mao Mao can enjoy his retirement with nothing to worry about again. Mary took Mao Mao to the vet who prescribed medicated soap and medicine to help his skin and ears to heal. Mary gave him a soothing bath once he arrived at his new home. After the tiring journey from China to America and the transfer from the airport, plus the visit to his new vet, and meeting his new mom, Mao Mao took a well earned nap in his new home with his new toy.
Mao Mao has been checked in and all the necessary paperwork has been completed. He is comfortable in his crate and now we are waiting for take off. Everyone is excited to see what he will make of his new country - America! Mao Mao (and Mao Niu) have both had to stay extra days in Beijing and their original flights were postponed. Both have been treated for Superficial Pyoderma so one of our pet transport colleagues has been administering medicine twice a day. Unfortunately both Mao Mao and Mao Niu were shaved so that the medicine could be administered more effectively and so that, because of the weather getting hotter in Beijing, they could fly to Arizona as soon as possible. Their unfortunate circumstances has not dampened both dogs' enthusiasm and they are still keen to play, give everyone kisses and make everyone laugh at their antics. Everyone loves Mao Mao and Mao Niu. Mao Mao was taken for a last walk, with one of our other Golden Retrievers, by his favorite volunteer, Zhang, He is pne of the students who take out the sick and elderly dogs living at Du's house. He took him to the park opposite Du's house and stayed there for a while. The students who have grown fond of Mao Mao because he is such a gentle old man. have even recruited other students to take the dogs for walks, students who were previously scared of dogs and who had had no prior interaction with them. We are so proud of Mao Mao.
