Kang Kang has been busy exploring the garden in her home and sniffing all the new, exciting smells! She isn't used to a collar being around her neck but a few scratches here and there will not get rid of it! So many new things. Kang Kang is getting along really well her new fur sister and brother, Belle and Buddy. Below she is with Belle.

Kang Kang is settling in to Sheila's home really well. She is learning to sit in line with Sheila's other dogs to receive tasty treats like cooked chicken! She also loves Sheila's 2 and a half year old son Zack. Below, she is trying to get Zack's attention to give him kisses. Kang Kang has met her new vet. As always she had a smile on her beautiful face! She had x rays and blood taken. The x rays showed that her knees are fused which means she has never been able to move her legs since she contracted Canine Distemper as a puppy. It also showed arthritis in her knees and ankles. The vet has prescribed Rimadyl, an anti inflammatory, tablet daily. Although she is not in any pain, it will manage the discomfort.
We were worried how Kang Kang, with her disability, would cope with the few and long flights to America but she did great and now she has met her foster mom, Sheila, for the first time! Kang Kang will visit the groomer, like Jin Niu, to pamper her and give her skin and fur moisturizing treatments. She will be assessed soon by Bill Buckley of Pet Artificial Limbs and Support and we are very excited to see what he will decide is best for Kang Kang's disability. He works with a vet who specializes in difficult surgery so we could find out whether surgery to help her walk normally will be available. We know she will settle in well with Sheila and her family and that her Golden Retriever and Chow Chow at home will welcome her. We look forward to seeing and sharing updates of her new life. After an over 12 hour flight, Kang Kang finally arrived in the United States of America, at Chicago O'Hare International Airport. It is a short stop over until her final flight to Las Vegas so she and Jin Niu will be given walks to stretch their legs and food and water. Their flight crates will be cleaned and they will be tidied up before their final journey. The flight to Las Vegas should only take around an hour and a half to two hours and then she will finally meet her adopter, Sheila!
The time has finally arrived for Kang Kang to leave China. We are very happy that she has been given this amazing chance at a new life and the best veterinary and prosthetic care. Kang Kang will live with Goldens Without Borders founder, Sheila and she will have 2 other Golden Retrievers to keep her company! Belle and Buddy! She was taken for a walk, with Jin Niu, by the staff at the pet transport company, as the sun rose over Beijing. She and Jin Niu were then put in to their travel crates and checked in. Their flight wasn't delayed and they will now have a 13 hour flight to Chicago O'Hare International Airport. They will arrive there in the evening where they will have around 3 hours to stretch their legs and have something to eat and drink. Then they will leave Chicago and head for their final destination - Las Vegas! Jin Niu arrived safely in Beijing Airport and after having something to eat and drink, a walk to stretch her legs and a rest, she was ready to explore the pet hotel in the airport. She and Kang Kang had each other for company and were soon playing and treating the whole experience like a game. Kang Kang and Jin Niu were flown from Chengdu to Beijing Airport on Saturday 11 March. Du packed them some food to eat and bedding to lie on. The flight was delayed for 20 minutes but was only 2 hours long. Both the girls will understand the procedure and sensation, on their next flight, a little better.
Kang Kang's last breakfast at Bo Ai was a bittersweet one because we will be really sad to see her go but very happy that she has finally found her forever home. After breakfast, Kang Kang and Jin Niu traveled by car to Chengdu airport where they will stay the night. In the morning they will fly to Beijing. They will stay in the pet hotel there until their big day on Tuesday 14th March! Exciting times ahead! Kang Kang is having a pamper. A shower and blow dry will make her feel better and also wash away the dust and smell of the shelter. Du brought Kang Kang back to her house to do the pampering and one of our volunteers did the showering. Time is drawing closer now and we are all excited that Kang Kang will have access to a top prosthetic's doctor called Bill who will visit and assess her once she is settled. Sheila, the lady behind Goldens Without Borders, is taking another of our Golden Retrievers and we couldn't be happier. Jin Niu will be on the same flight as Kang Kang. See her blog here. Both dogs will fly from Beijing to Chicago on Tuesday 14th March 2017. That same evening, both dogs will make their final plane journey to Las Vegas where they will be met by Sheila. |
