Adoption Policy
When we rescue animals the majority when fit and healthy will be available for re homing. We try to re home our dogs and cats in China but various factors, like size restrictions in Chinese cities, means that this is not always possible so we also offer our dogs and cats for adoption overseas.
Once we receive your application we will get back to you and ask you some questions. Once we have spoken to you and have a sense of the home that one of our dogs or cats will have with you, and you are happy with the cost of the process, we will ask you to send a non refundable deposit of US$350.00 to secure your dog or cat. This deposit is for the necessary vaccinations and veterinary procedures like microchips, travel to and from vets appointments and customs offices and travel of your dog or cat from our shelter to our nearest international airport prior to your dog's or cat's onward journey to you. We reserve the right to refuse any application. |
Each adoption is different which means time-frames are also different. Do not worry if it seems to take a long time to receive your dog or cat. They will meet you as soon as we know everything is sorted out in China.
Adoptions are not completed on a first come, first served basis. Our overseas adoption coordinator will be the single point of contact for all aspects of the adoption; while the animal is at the shelter, when there are veterinary appointments and when they are ready to depart to come to meet you and they will keep you updated about everything. They will let you know all the travel arrangements and will liaise with the travel company on your behalf. They will require footage of you meeting your dog or cat at your airport as soon as possible. This is very important because everyone in China will be anxiously waiting for the safe arrival of our beloved dog or cat in to your care. Our adoption coordinator is there to help and guide you and will be there for you throughout your dog's or cat's life. As part of the adoption, we require you to send regular updates, photos and videos of your new companion's life with you. We want to share your joy. |
Terms and conditions:
We cannot be held responsible for any medical or veterinary treatment that your new companion may need after they have left China. We cannot guarantee that your chosen dog will be cat friendly or your chosen cat will be dog friendly. Most dogs and cats have been rescued from the streets, some from the Dog & Cat Meat Trade. Very rarely we get cat friendly dogs or dog friendly cats so it is your responsibility to introduce your dog and cat to integrate them with your household. You must never leave your dog unsupervised with your cat until you are 100% sure that they are friends. This may take a few weeks, even months and although things will be civil, some dogs and cats never get along. We are here to help with integration advice but advise that a professional trainer also be called in to avoid any upset. Please do not apply to adopt any animal if you have children below the age of 10 years old. We cannot guarantee the temperament or behaviour of your dog or cat in it's new home, especially in the first few months. Most dogs and cats are more than happy being left alone but some react badly and can whine, howl, chew, mess and be destructive. Rescue dogs and cats have already been abandoned once so it is important that you recognise that separation anxiety could be an issue. Our adopted dogs and cats fall hard in love with their new families and know that all their wishes have come true. However, we advise that from the moment you take your new companion home, you build up to the time when you will have to leave them, even if that is just to go out on the street, out of view so that your dog or cat will know after a few moments you will be back. Build up the time you leave and they will learn that you are coming home every time. If separation anxiety is a big issue, we advise you seek the services of a professional trainer to help. |
If for whatever reason you find yourself unable to keep your new companion anymore, please contact us and we will try to arrange alternative accommodation. This will be a last resort. When you adopt an animal from us, we expect it to stay in your family for the rest of it's natural life.
Adopting a dog from China can be expensive but giving a forever home to someone who has witnessed unimaginable horror in the Dog Meat Trade or at Yulin Dog Meat Festival or who was thrown out on the streets to starve to death when they were sick and needed someone to help them get well again will be the single most rewarding thing you will ever do and will be worth the money you spend.
At least that's what our adopters tell us.... Read the blogs here of the lucky dogs who found new homes abroad. |
