This little dog was saved from slaughter when a kind lady heard his screams. The lady, in Chengdu, bought the dog and appealed on Chinese social media for our help to take him to our shelter.
Our volunteer Xiao Xie, and his wife, drove the 3 hour journey from Guangyuan to Chengdu to meet the rescuer and the dog.
Xiao Xie asked "He is so good, how can you kill him?" The dog owner replied "This dog does not bite people, it is too docile to be a guard dog! I threw it away a few times and it came back so we had to kill it!" (The dog's owner had taken him to a hilltop and left him there a few times only for the dog to make his way back home. The owner could not get rid of the dog that way so had decided to kill him and sell the meat for the Chinese New Year celebration!).
Disgusted with the owner's answer, Xiao Xie and his wife put the dog in their car and made the journey back to Guangyuan. It was evening by the time they returned so they took the dog to their house for something to eat and then took him to our shelter the morning after.
The dog probably wonders why his owner did not want him, why he wanted to hurt him. He has not had a great start in life and is such a sweet little boy. It's hard to believe that he could have ended up on someone's plate.
He would make someone a wonderful companion and will be available for adoption soon.

Mr Wang, from the bank in Guangyuan, made time out of his busy work schedule to visit our shelter and to meet the animals He also brought 100 pounds of rice, 7 pounds of pork and some treats.
The dogs are always happy to see visitors so they greeted Mr Wang with welcome barks and waggy tails.
Mr Wang says that the problem of stray dogs in China is a social problem. He hopes that all sectors of society can pay attention to and participate in responsible ownership with the sterilization of pets and the welfare aspect; not abandoning the pet when it is ill or simply grown up!
Mr Wang's intention is to spread the word about animal welfare and responsibility. Education is key to change. Thank you Mr Wang for your support!
See some of our education events here.
Yesterday we told you about Mr Wang from the bank in Guangyuan and how he came to our shelter with food for the animals and was spreading the message about responsible pet ownership and animal welfare and protection. He is definitely leading by example! He has now insisted on sending meat and steamed bread to our shelter to feed our furry children every day!
Mr Wang is also going to spend his spare time at the meat market to promote the idea that stray animals are a social problem and that ending the tragic fate of stray dogs is not something that any one person can accomplish. It needs the efforts of all of us. When more people help these stray dogs and listen to educators like Mr Wang, more stray dogs in Guangyuan could have a home.
His propaganda at the meat market inspired everyone and the owners of the stalls donated meat, bones and scraps to our shelter to feed the dogs and cats.
Thank you again Mr Wang and thanks to the stall owners for your donations of food for the animals!
Mr Wang, the manager from the bank in Guangyuan, is becoming a firm friend of Bo Ai shelter. Yesterday he, and a volunteer called Yao Yao, worked from day until night, giving baths, skin treatments and haircuts to our sick and disabled dogs.
The dogs loved having the 2 animal loving visitors give them soothing baths and were on their best behaviour for Mr Wang and Yao Yao.
Our founder, Du Yufeng, has not been well this past week. In the days during the week she has been going to a hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine having accupuncture and infusions of anti inflammatories and analgesics because of a herniated lumbar disc causing sciatic pain.
Mr Wang's and Yao Yao's help has come at just the right time. Thank you to you both for your hard work helping our dogs!
This little dog was rescued by our volunteer Yang after we received a call. Yang brought the dog back to our founder Du Yufeng's apartment block to be treated. His wound was flushed with antiseptic solution and he was given antibiotics and painkillers.
Our shelter is fast becoming a disabled dog club. Most of the disabled dogs, like this one, are small and will make great companions. They won't stand a chance to be adopted in China. It's such a shame that they are being overlooked because people see them as different. They still want a home of their own, someone to love and love them back. Can you help one of our little cuties? Please consider adopting one of our disabled dogs. You are their only chance.
This little Poodle was rescued after we received a call from a concerned animal lover. The Poodle's fur is matted, smelly and sparse and her back legs are bent under her, seemingly unable to hold her weight making it hard for her to walk properly.
She was very thirsty when she was brought back to our founder, Du Yufeng's home. She was given food and a warm bed until it was time to visit the vet for assessment.
THIS DOG NEEDS YOUR HELP!
Thanks to our volunteer Yaoyao who came to the help of this poor dog and sent her to our founder, Du Yufeng. The poor fur child's skin has various bleeding and festering wounds all over her body and the skin on her neck has come off! We suspect this wound has been done on purpose. The lines around her neck wound are very straight, like a section of her skin has been cut off! Along with some of the wounds which are also suspicious, this girl has been through a lot of abuse. She is in a lot of pain and is depressed. She will need regular medication and painkillers for a long time. We need your donation, however small, to buy these medications because there are other sick dogs who need the existing medication in our store room. Can you help this dog? Please donate today.
Thank you for helping this little girl.
Every day her wounds are cleaned and she is given various medicines day and night. Lying down is painful for her, she does not sleep well but she is on the road to recovery. Our founder, Du Yufeng is nursing her day and night.
Du named this dog Zhengui (meaning precious) because her life was precious. Unfortunately Zhengui just lost the will to live and has sadly died in her sleep. We are devastated because she endured such cruelty and neglect in her short life. Thank you to everyone for your concern and messages of support for Zhengui.
Our founder, Du Yufeng, and our worker Yang were on their way home when they saw this dog wandering on the street. The Samoyed is barely recognisable with half of his fur either hanging off or lost, his bald skin cold.
We assume that he has been abandoned because of his skin condition. He is such a friendly boy and he let Yang approach him to tie string around him so that he could take him to Du's car. When Yang put him in the car, he didn't resist, happy that he had some attention and love.
When Du and Yang arrived back at her apartment block, they gave him a light meal. We do not know how long he has wandered the streets, sleeping on the cold pavements and searching for scraps but now he is warm, will receive the correct veterinary treatment and food!
It is very upsetting and frustrating to see a dog in this condition. Samoyeds are a popular breed in China and his previous owners would have paid a lot of money for him. Why not pay money to treat his skin condition? More education is needed regarding the aftercare of pet ownership and with your help we can take our education events to more people.
You can find out more here.
Samoyeds are also found regularly on trucks, full of dogs, headed for slaughter. It could have been a different story for this poor boy if we hadn't rescued him...
We welcome your donation, however small, to help dogs like this one recover. You can donate here.
Thank you for your support.
Our founder, Du Yufeng, received a call to help a tiny puppy. It was thought that the puppy had been a car accident victim. Du arrived at the scene with one of our workers, Xiao Yang, and took the puppy back to her house where she checked him over properly. The puppy had lots of holes on his body along with dander and fleas. Du gave him painkilling and anti-inflammatory injections then decided that in order to clean the wounds properly, she would need to shave his fur. The holes looked like bite wounds so she also gave him antibiotics. Du wrapped him up in a warm coat, gave him a good meal and soon he was ready to sleep. Xiao Yang stayed up to help take care of him and reassure him throughout the night. He is now recovering from his ordeal. Whether he was born stray or dumped, this little boy has had lots of pain and fear in his short life!
We can not continue to rescue and treat dogs like this one without your donations. Thank you for your support.
Unfortunately, this little puppy's body could not carry on the fight for life. He has sadly passed away. So young, with a whole life ahead of him; ruined by the actions of those who left him to fend for himself on the streets!.
This Chinese Rural Dog was involved in a car accident. Caring Bo Ai supporter, Li Ping, called our founder, Du Yufeng, to help her with the rescue.
Once at Du's, Li Ping hugged the dog while she and Du gritted their teeth and Du cleaned the wound. All the way through the treatment, the dog, although in obvious pain, never once turned to bite Du or Li.
After cleaning the wound, Du applied hydrogel dressing and sterilize gauze. She then gave him injections; Ceftriaxone (antibiotic), Tramadol Hydrochloride (pain relief) andVitamin C (to help skin regeneration).
Because of the nature of his wound, Du is following the Secondary Intention Healing method. You can read more about this method here.
To help with emergency rescues like this one we welcome your donation.
The skin on the outside of the wound is healing and new skin can clearly be seen.
Our founder, Du Yufeng, continues to apply hydrogel and give the dog pain relief. It will be a long time before the leg is totally healed but we are pleased with her progress.
This puppy was left in the entrance of our founder, Du Yufeng's apartment block when she was taking rubbish out. He was lethargic, skinny and reluctant to move. He is being given antibiotics and monitored.

Our founder, Du Yufeng went out to dinner where the restaurant manager and waiter told her that a dog had been hit by a car. They told her that the dog's scream of pain was terrible. Du immediately put down her bowl of food and went to look for the dog. She saw him lying at the side of a big car, so immediately called our worker, Fan, to come and help her rescue him. She tried to make friends with the dog by feeding him but he wasn't interested. When Fan tried to pick him up, the dog was very scared. Eventually Fan was able to pick him up and take him to Du's car.
At night, the pet hospital is off duty so Du took him to her house to clean the wound with antibacterial spray, give him pain relief, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics. She named him Wangcai.
Du took Wangcai to Doctor Li's surgery the day after.
This dog has been hanging around this road for over six years! His owner opened a cold noodle restaurant here six years ago, eventually sold the restaurant, but left the dog here! Whether it's sunny or rainy or very cold or very hot, the dog has been waiting for his owner to come back for him. He turns over the trash can when he's hungry: for six years!
We have tried to get him to the shelter many times, but we couldn't catch him. Du would take him some food, but because he was afraid of people, he would run away and the food would be eaten by other stray dogs!
Now his leg is broken, and he would not leave the place where his master had once opened a restaurant!
Wangcai is now safe, fed and recovering. Your donations help to treat and care for rescued dogs like this one. You can make a one off donation or set up a monthly sponsor fee.
Thank you for your support.
Our founder, Du Yufeng, had just come back from the shelter to find a dog that had been tied to her carport. One of our workers managed to cut the dog free because he could see how tight he was tied up. The dog was very wary of humans but did not try to run away.
When Du arrived back at her apartment block, she tried to get near to the dog, showing she was friendly. Eventually he let her near enough to put a makeshift collar and leash around his neck and so Du asked our worker, Fan, to take the dog up the stairs and give him some food and water. The dog will be vaccinated, wormed and monitored and once back to full health he will need a new home.
If you cannot offer him a forever home, overseas, maybe you can help with his upkeep by choosing from 3 small monthly sponsorship payments?

We received a call from some concerned animal loving waitresses, from a hot pot restaurant, telling us they thought a mother dog had been hit by a car and had internal injuries. The waitresses often feed the dog and were very concerned about her and her puppies.
When our founder, Du Yufeng, and our worker, Fan, arrived at the scene, the dog was very ill. On closer inspection Du found the dog had mastitis so she gave her anti inflammatory and pain killing injections plus antibiotics. She also put a cone around the dog's neck to prevent her licking the affected teats.
When the dog was stabilised and moved to a cooler area, before being taken back to the shelter, a couple of the waitresses took Du to the puppies.
Their mother had probably struggled to feed them given the pain she was in so the puppies will now be given milk by us until they are fully weaned. This way their mother can recover fully.
Vaccinations and medication is where the bulk of your donations are spent and they always need to be stocked. If you would like to be a part of buying these supplies for needy dogs and cats you can sponsor our work. by choosing from 3 small monthly payments. Thank you for your support.
This pretty girl, appropriately named Mei Li, had a hard time recovering from her milk fever and mastitis but with the correct treatment and lots of love she got there in the end. Today Mei Li and her puppies live in the shelter and are happy and healthy. Mei Li has a beautiful smile and she is hoping to find that special person to give her a forever home. Her puppies are getting older and they are also available for adoption (overseas adoptions welcome).
We couldn't continue to help dogs like Mei Li and her little family without your help. Donating and sharing our posts means that we can respond to emergency cases like Mei Li's so thank you very much for your support!
Our founder Du Yufeng and our worker Fan passed the Wanyuan submersible bridge where they found a little lonely shadow, a puppy. Du immediately stopped the car and Fan quickly got out to see the puppy.
The baby was cold and scared. Du and Fan looked around the area but there was no sign of a mother dog or any other puppies nearby. Maybe someone dumped the little one?
Another dumping was likely in the case of the rescue the day after. Du and Fan were passing near to the entrance of the toll station when they saw an injured stray dog. This poor elderly dog was very thin and covered in fleas, with lots of fur missing.
Du and Fan took the dog to Doctor Li's pet hospital to check for anemia and give him a check over. In his eyes are cataracts, maybe his master did not want him anymore and threw him out on to the desolate highway?
Both these dogs are now safe, warm, fed and being cared for at our shelter but we really do need your donations to help us continue to care for all these recent rescues aswell as to keep caring for the hundreds of other dogs and cats at the shelter.
Please help us to help them. Thank you for your support.
We received a call telling us that a mother dog and her 10 puppies were living among building materials and debris and the mother dog was having to leave her babies while she went to find food for herself. In the afternoon the mother was confronted by an old woman and her son who tried to surround the dog. The dog panicked in fear and tried to push past the angry couple. In the process the dog caught the old woman's leg with one of her claws. The old woman's son threatened to kill the dog and her puppies but an animal lover stopped him.
Someone, in the meantime had called the Chengguan (Urban Management Bureau) who came to take the mother and puppies away. The old woman's son shouted at the law-enforcement officers and asked them to put the mother dog and her babies to death.
By this time, a Guangyuan TV reporter was on the scene to record the incident and a crowd had formed. Many people sympathized with the dog family and were talking about the mother dog, how caring she was, comforting her babies by feeding them even when they were in a cage in the back of the Chengguan's truck.
Our founder, Du Yufeng, immediately contacted the leader of the Chengguan who is very caring. Du told the leader she would take the mother and her puppies to our shelter where hopefully they will be adopted. The leader was very happy. We have a good relationship with our local government departments.
When Du, our worker Fan and volunteer Xaoling arrived at the department reception to complete paperwork, they could see the mother dog and her babies in the cage. The mother was understandably wary but let Du and our team take her and her babies to Du's car.
Once at the shelter they were finally safe and warm! The mother was given a good meal before they all settled down for a peaceful sleep.
We need your help to look after these 11 new residents. Can you donate to help us please?
Once old enough, all these puppies (and the mother too) will need a new home. If you would like to register your interest please contact us.
Thank you for your support.
We got a call from Mrs Wang in the Dongba Shuixie Huadu waterside district telling us that there was a stray dog in the area. Our founder, Du Yufeng, and our worker Fan went to meet Mrs Wang who told them that people were being horrible to the dog, saying she had bitten people. The stray dog had given birth to a puppy who had since died but she kept in front of the puppy every day until a street cleaner had removed it. The people in the area told Mrs Wang that they thought the dog wanted to avenge the death of her puppy so would bite people.
When Du and Fan arrived at Mrs Wang's apartment block, she was coaxing the dog into the entrance area with food. The dog was very docile and loving, wagging her tail as Du talked to her. She also went to Fan too.
When Du, Fan and Mrs Wang took the dog to Du's parked car, the dog started barking at an old woman nearby. The woman said, "If that dog bites me, you will give me 120,000 Chinese Yuan" Du said, "Why would this dog bite you? Have you hit her? Why did she bark at you when she was silent as other people passed by? Did you kill her puppy?!" Mrs. Wang advised Du to ignore the woman but this woman made Du angry. The dog's reaction to her made her think that this woman had been mean to the dog.
Mrs Wang and Fan tried to coax the dog in to Du's car but she was reluctant to get in until Du reassured her and picked her up. Once in the car she was safe and taken to our shelter.
Her matted coat will be groomed and she will be vaccinated. She will make someone a wonderful, loving companion. If you are interested in adopting her, please contact us.
Two girls called our founder, Du Yufeng, after they found a cat with holes on it's body. The holes were infected puncture wounds, probably from a fight with another cat. The cat was also very thin. In the community, there were so many people but no one was willing to help the cat so we thanked the two girls for calling us.
We took the cat to Doctor Li's surgery. He sedated the cat to clean all the wounds, gave an injection of antibiotics and analgesic and prescribed more antibiotics and analgesics for the cat to be treated back at Du's home.
Your donations help to buy the medicines needed to treat cats like this one.
Thank you for your support.
Our founder Du Yufeng received a call from a couple of animal lovers who were waiting at the entrance of her apartment block. They told Du they had saved this mother dog and her puppies from the farmer's market. The mother dog had given birth in a corner but the market management could not tolerate them. The mother gave birth to seven puppies but 4 of them were thrown into the garbage truck!! The couple had gone to the market to shop and saw what happened. They were able to save 3 puppies but the poor mother dog had to watch, powerless, as her puppies were taken from her and thrown in the truck.
This kind couple found some string as a makeshift leash and walked the mother dog, with them carrying her puppies, from the farmer's market to Du's house.
Now, the fur children finally have a safe place to eat and sleep.
They have been wormed and vaccinated and will be available for overseas adoption in a few months time.
There are lots of animal lovers in China but there are also people who do not see animals as sentient beings. Until China brings an animal protection law in, all we can do is try to educate people and save the animals.
Your donations enable us to continue our work. Thank you for your support.
Our founder, Du Yufeng, received a phone call from a girl who was outside a car repair shop and very concerned about a little dog with a massive mammary tumor. Du and our volunteer, Xiaoling, immediately went down to the scene to help. Animal lovers in the area told Du that the little dog had given birth last year and she already had a small tumour. The tumour had grown aggressively in the last year so someone advised the owner to get treatment for the dog. The owner said the dog has been raised for 10 years but they had no money to treat her. She was abandoned to walk among the garbage looking for food. This year the tumour was getting bigger and recently it had opened and started bleeding. Du and Xiaoling took the dog to Doctor Li's Pet Hospital. Dr. Lee said: "She is too weak to operate. We must first give her a few days of liquid, anti-inflammatory, supplementary energy, increase some nutrition and after two days we will check the biochemistry. If the liver and kidney appear normal, we can implement surgery to excise the tumour". This little dog is hanging on to life. She wants to live. Her eyes appeal to us to help her and we will. But we also need your help. Donations are a lifeline to dogs like this one. If you can donate even the cost of a cup of coffee, it will all add up. Thank you for your kind help.
The little dog we rescued with the massive mammary tumour needed a blood transfusion before and during her operation so Tie Dan, a black Labrador who was recently adopted from our shelter, came with his new owner to Doctor Li's hospital where he bravely donated blood so that the little dog could be saved. The surgery went smoothly and the little dog was soon back at our founder, Du Yufeng's house. She is a good patient and doesn't complain when needing medicines at all hours of the day and night. Thanks to Doctor Li for removing this big burden from her small body and thanks to you for donating the cost of the surgery.
We named this little dog Xiao Mei and thought she would stay at our shelter forever because of her age but...
she has found her forever home!
A local supporter has adopted her so we will see her all the time. Your donations helped Xiao Mei to recover from her ordeal. Now she is going to live her twilight years with someone to love her. Thank you for your support!
Another Alaskan Malamute has been abandoned by his owner! Pet Beauty Shop boss Xiao Wang called our founder, Du Yufeng to take him to our shelter. When Xiao Wang realised the Malamute had skin disease, he treated him for one week, having to shave his matted coat off in the process. The poor dog did not know that his master had already left him forever...
When Du went to collect him and take him to the shelter, all the fur children came to greet their new friend enthusiastically. Now, he is settling in and getting to know everyone.
Our founder, Du Yufeng, received a text message from some villagers telling her that a stray dog had given birth to 7 puppies. The mother dog had bitten a man in order to protect her pups and the man had called the police. The text said that if the police came to catch this stray dog, it's estimated that the dog will die.
After receiving the message, Du immediately contacted one of our volunteers, Xiaoling to help her with the rescue.
At the scene, the mother dog kissed Du's face, knowing that she was there to save them. There was no attempt to bite Du or any signs of aggression when Xiaoling went near to the puppies. Why is it that such a large community can not accommodate a mother dog and her children?!
The mother and her babies are now at our shelter, safe, but 8 more residents means homes are needed even more for the healthy dogs in the shelter. Can you offer one of them a forever home? Please click here for more information.
If you cannot adopt at this time, we welcome your donation to help to feed and vaccinate the mother and babies.
Thank you for your support.
Our founder, Du Yufeng was out buying food for the cats at the shelter when she saw these puppies running around the road on the hillside next to our shelter. Abandoned, dumped! Our workers, nearly every week, are going out to pick up poor babies. Now the shelter has more than 40 puppies! The government does not publicize sterilization and the common people do not understand the meaning of sterilization and think that a female dog should have (at least) one litter of puppies but they aren't prepared to try to find homes for these dogs!
The villagers here told us: "Before we (Bo Ai shelter)were here, the puppies were born and thrown on the mountain to fend for themselves. Other people, directly after the birth of puppies, throw them into the cesspool to drown! Now for more than a 10 miles radius of our shelter, the villagers throw their dogs to us!
Our shelter is the 'Longtan Township Island of Puppies' ... It is not the puppies' fault, this is directly related to the Government, they do not advocate sterilization, do not eliminate the breeding business, do not do civilized dog propaganda so it is up tp us to try and educate and help to change the mindset. Your donations help with the education and the feeding/ vaccinating the puppies throughout their lives but we also badly need adopters to give our dogs (and cats) forever homes. Adopting a healthy dog gives them, and us, happiness but it will also provide space for sick and injured rescues.
More information on adopting one of our animals.
After more dog sterilization operations, our founder, Du Yufeng, and some of the veterinary doctors and nurses went out to eat. The owner of Li's Family Courtyard Hotel opened the restaurant and called Du to say there was a puppy that had been hit by a car and had gone to their hotel to hide, screaming in pain.
Du and the vets drove to the hotel where the owner helped them to catch the puppy. It looked like his hind leg was broken and once back at Du's home, the vets got to work, giving him analgesics, anti-inflammatory and hemostatic while examining the leg. The puppy cooperated without a sound! He is very brave!
Your donations go towards emergency rescues and treatments like this one. The puppy will now get better because of you.
Thank you for your support.
Around an hour ago, we received a call telling us that a dog has been hit by a car. The road has 6 lanes so it is very dangerous for stray dogs to cross and obviously the driver did not bother about hitting and hurting this living being. Now he has a broken leg!
The vets from Chengdu are still with us to sterilize the dogs at the shelter so a couple accompanied our founder, Du Yufeng, to the scene of the accident.
We have taken the dog back with us and we will update you soon on his progress.
If you would like to help us with emergencies like this one, you can sponsor us by choosing 3 small monthly amounts.

This Tibetan Mastiff was roaming about for 78 days in rain and sunshine, the people who passed by this way ignoring him.
A villager called our founder, Du Yufeng, when a volunteer for a pet hospital didn't arrive because the Mastiff is strong. Du went to the scene with some of the doctors and nurses (who are still at our shelter to sterilize dogs). The villagers said "Thank you for saving a life, when it rains, he slept on the road, it is too pitiful".
Du took the Mastiff back to the shelter where, before he got out of the car, he was tested for canine distemper virus and dog parvovirus. Now, he will join the other Tibetan Mastiffs at the shelter, likely for the rest of his life since dogs this big are usually banned in cities in China. An overseas breed specialist charity is their only hope to find a new home.
Our founder, Du Yufeng, and a doctor and nurse from the pet hospital in Chengdu were driving on the highway towards the shelter when they noticed a Golden Retriever led on the side of the road. Du stopped her car and approached the dog, throwing food to show she was a friend. The Golden wagged his tail and approached everyone. He had been lying next to a rope with chain so had probably been used as a guard dog. His head and muzzle were very swollen, making his eyes almost close and on closer inspection, Du could see a stab mark in the top of his head. It was obviously very painful for him because, for a moment, he got angry. Du named him Nian Zong.
Back at the shelter his head wound was cleaned and he was given strong antibiotics and painkillers. His whole face is badly infected.
Du has seen this type of wound before. In the Dog Meat Trade. Butchers hit the dogs over the head with sticks, often with nails or hooks in the end of them She saw many of these injuries at Yulin. We don't know why Nian Zong's owners did this to him but whatever reason- he has been suffering for a while. We are actually wondering, because of his head injury, whether he escaped from slaughter....
