A man in his 50's brought a sick Pomeranian to Dr. Liang's Veterinary Clinic in Chengdu in a cardbox to be put to sleep. The vet told the man that they don't put dogs to sleep.
The man said that the Pom was already 18 years old and that she had given birth to many puppies. Her teats were hard with a swollen stomach. Du, who was in Chengdu, overheard the conversation and went over. The man claimed the Pomeranian used to belong to an old lady but was later given to him. He said he had the Pomeranian for 5 years and said there are some others at home. Du strongly suspected that he had been using the Pomeranian for breeding and now that the dog was old and had no value for him, he just wanted the Pomeranian to be left there and put to sleep. The vet did an ultrasound scan and found that the Pom's liver and kidney were bleeding and she had pyometra (her uterus was inected with pus). The vet said it was too complicated but Du wouldn't give up easily so she took the Pom back to her friend's house for the night, planning to bring her to the Veterinary Faculty of Southwest University for Nationalities the next morning.
When Du took her to the University the following morning, just when the nurse had finished hanging up the IV fluid, the Pom took 2 deep breaths and died. Du cried her heart out for the Pom-that she couldn't help her sooner. She was upset at how many Chinese people use animals to make money then just throw them
away like trash when they hold no more value for them.
As usual, Du gave the Pom a Buddhist ritual burial (photo with her little body fully covered with the white cloth).
She was very proud to be able to give her a proper burial.
There are many dogs who need your help at the shelter, dogs that have made it.
