This young dog was rescued after being tied up since he was a small puppy. When our founder Du Yufeng spoke to residents around the area they told her that the dog had been wandering for a while and that they had tried to help him but couldn't catch him. They had witnessed his previous owners beating him if he followed them to their new apartment because they had abandoned him when they moved from their old house. Obviously the dog did not know why his family did not want him or why his previous master was being horrible to him and eventually he began roaming with other dogs in the neighborhood.
We eventually trapped him and found out that he had a very nasty wound around his neck, caused by a thin metal wire digging in to his neck. We assume this was from when his owners tied him up as a puppy. Many people have dogs as guard dogs. They don't care about their needs, only that they deter intruders and the dog had suffered greatly because as he grew bigger, the wire stayed the same size.
The dog's neck was in a bad way. Necrosis had begun in parts of the wound. He needed immediate veterinary care so we took him to our local vet, Dr Li Qing. The dog (named 'Wanderer') was sedated and the wire cut off. The wound was flushed with antiseptic solution and stictched. Wanderer was put on a course of strong antibiotics.
Whenever we have to treat an animal like Wanderer, weeks and sometimes months of medical rehabilitation is necessary so we appealed for donations to help us pay Dr Li and buy medicines to continue treating Wanderer's wound at home. HSI (Humane Society International) responded to our appeal and gave us a grant to help us and we are grateful for their support.
